Going into the last game of the 1941 season batting .3955, Ted Williams' manager gave him the choice of sitting out a season ending double header. His average would be rounded up to .400 and he would be the first person to bat .400 since 1930. He decided to play both games, went 6 for 8 and ended the season at .406...then he served in WWII for 4 years...not to mention Korea as well. He never won a World Series and spent his entire career in Boston. He was a terrible manager but a great fisherman.
But Billy Terry is worth mentioning here as well. He is the last NL player to bat .400 and held the league record for 11 years until Ted Williams wiped his bat with it. Ted Williams has held the record since 1941.

I'll start watching baseball again when someone beats it or wins the Triple Crown which TW won twice. Carl Yastrzemski, another Red Sox, was the last person to win it, in 1967.
